When creating a peer-to-peer event through Event.Gives, you will be prompted to choose between "Fixed"or "Un-Fixed." This article reviews the key differences of fixed and un-fixed peer-to-peer events, allowing you to make an informed choice when creating your next event. You are able to change your event format in the 'Settings' tab of the manager portal.
Fixed Peer-to-Peer Events
- Common Use Cases:
- Events that have a flat unit of measurement, such as a 5K, where all participants are expected to complete the same run, walk, bike, etc...
- Using donations to peer pages as a manor of voting. For example, a "dancing with the stars" event. In this example, each dancer would have a peer page and collect flat donations.
- How It Works:
- Fixed peer-to-peer events allow for supporters to create peer pages and collect donations. These donation amounts are decided by the donor. For example, a supporter donating to a peer's page on a fixed peer-to-peer event chooses to donate $10. They will then complete this transaction for $10. There are no post-event calculations.
- These donations, in order to show on the peer's page, must be paid at the time of the transaction. If you add a pledge to your cart without completing the transaction, it will NOT show on the peer's page.
Un-Fixed Peer-to-Peer Events
- Common Use Cases:
- Un-fixed peer-to-peer events are often used for competition purposes. For example, we often see read-a-thons, walk-a-thons, or other competitions meant to push peer page owners to not only collect pledges but compete for the most units completed.
- How It Works:
- When you create your event, you will choose a unit. For example, this unit could be "books" read or "miles" walked/ran.
- When a supporter donates to a peer's page, their final donation amount will be calculated by multiplying their pledge by the amount of units the peer completes.
- Example: I pledged $2 to Susan Smith for every mile [unit] she runs. At the end of the event, Susan runs 12 miles. After her 12 miles are entered into the platform (either by Susan or the event organizer), I receive an email with a link to my cart to pay. My final pledge amount would be $2 multiplied by the 12 miles she ran, totaling $24.
